Spice II: Social, Pragmatics, Independence, Communication and Emotional Regulation.
The Spice II classroom is designed to support students with Autism as they increase their participation in the general education program. Programming is designed to meet each students individual needs focusing on strengths and increasing skills so that they can be successful.
This is Joan Shaffer’s third year as the Spice II teacher at Sonoma Ranch. She originally obtained her teaching degree from Michigan State University. After graduating, she moved to Arizona teaching special education in the Scottsdale School District for the next ten years. At that time, Joan decided to take a break from the classroom focusing on obtaining a Masters in Special Education from Arizona State University. Joan continued working managing a grant funded through the mental health system supporting teachers and parents managing children with challenging behaviors. Four years ago, Joan decided she missed the classroom and returned to her first love, teaching.
