Welcome! 

My name is Debra Cambridge and I am thrilled to be teaching at Sonoma Ranch! I have a wonderful husband, who is an engineer at Burns and McDonnell, and two fantastic children, both of whom graduated from ASU. (It feels like they were in 5th grade yesterday!) I grew up and attended school in Arizona (go SunDevils!) however, moved to the Kansas City area, where I worked as a police officer. After six years, my husband was transferred back to Arizona, where I developed training programs for corporations as well as the Department of Defense. I did the latter for another seven years and decided that if I did not follow my dream to teach children, I may never do so.

I have taught 6th grade and Pre-K and this is my third year teaching 5th graders. I came to Sonoma Ranch last year and feel as though I am home. I love it here and am so excited to be a part of the student-centered culture at Sonoma Ranch.

As an Ahwatukee resident, I take advantage of having mountain trails at my doorstep almost every weekend. In addition to being avid cyclists, my husband and I enjoy camping and escaping the heat in the mountains. As empty-nesters, we have discovered many ways to fill in the time previously spent on lacrosse and dance. It’s amazing how you actually miss the frantic pace and schedules of that time!

Curriculum

MATH: Fifth grade College and Career Ready math standards will focus heavily on problem solving. Students will learn multiple ways to solve problems. Students will learn the traditional algorithms for solving multiplication and division problems, but will also learn alternative methods. This gives students an opportunity to choose a method that makes sense to them. By using more than one method to solve problems, students are able to demonstrate understanding of abstract and concrete concepts and to check their work for accuracy. Students will study the following units: • Place value with decimals • Multiplication and division with whole numbers and decimals • Fractions concepts - including addition, subtractions, multiplication and division of fractions and mixed numbers with unlike denominators • Volume • Geometry with 2-D Objects • Coordinate Graphing • Scaling • Algebraic Thinking

SCIENCE: In fifth grade science students will study the following units, while also using the scientific method and engineering design process to critically analyze problems and develop solutions. • Earth, Moon, and the Universe • Human Body Systems • Matter • Force and Motion

SOCIAL STUDIES: Fifth grade social studies concepts focus on U.S. History. Students will study the following units: • Geography • Explorers • Colonization • Revolutionary War • Government • Civil War • Westward Expansion • Economics

LANGUAGE ARTS:

Key Ideas and Details
Read closely to determine what the text says explicitly and to make logical inferences from it; cite specific textual evidence when writing or speaking to support conclusions drawn from the text. Determine central ideas or themes of a text and analyze their development; summarize the key supporting details and ideas. Analyze how and why individuals, events, and ideas develop and interact over the course of a text.

Craft and Structure
Interpret words and phrases as they are used in a text, including determining technical, connotative, and figurative meanings, and analyze how specific word choices shape meaning or tone.
Analyze the structure of texts, including how specific sentences, paragraphs, and larger portions of the text (e.g., a section, chapter, scene, or stanza) relate to each other and the whole.
Assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of a text.

Integration of Knowledge and Ideas
Integrate and evaluate content presented in diverse media and formats, including visually and quantitatively, as well as in words.
